Amazon's Drone Delivery Program

Announced by Amazon on Thursday, the 30th, the permit authorizes the Prime Air service to operate drones "beyond the line of sight," overcoming a barrier that limited the drones' flight distance.

With this new permit, Amazon operators can remotely control the drones without seeing them physically. This approval applies to College Station, Texas, where Amazon began drone deliveries at the end of 2022.

Amazon plans to immediately expand its operations in College Station to reach customers in more densely populated areas. According to the company, this permit lays the groundwork for future drone operations expansion to other US locations.

Technology companies have been advocating for more flexible rules that allow new commercial applications of drones in residential areas, while privacy advocates and some aircraft pilots remain cautious. Amazon, which has been seeking this permit for years, obtained FAA approval by developing a strategy that ensures its drones can detect and avoid obstacles in the air.

To achieve this, Amazon submitted various engineering information to the FAA and conducted flight tests in the presence of federal inspectors. During these tests, Amazon's drones demonstrated their ability to navigate safely, avoiding planes, helicopters, and even a hot air balloon.

The FAA's approval marks an important milestone for Amazon, which has been planning to deliver online orders via drones for more than a decade. In 2013, Jeff Bezos, Amazon's founder, predicted that drones would be delivering packages to customers' homes within five years, but plans were delayed by regulatory obstacles.

Recently, Amazon announced the closure of a drone delivery site in Lockeford, California, and the opening of a new site in Tolleson, Arizona, later this year. By the end of the decade, Amazon aims to deliver 500 million packages by drones annually.
